Have you ever struggled to explain market dynamics, price fluctuations, or competitive strategies using endless spreadsheets or vague bullet points? Supply and demand graphs—the cornerstone of economic analysis—are essential for visualizing how product availability and consumer needs intersect.
Imagine presenting a growth strategy to investors, only to watch their eyes glaze over as you describe “market equilibrium” in text-heavy slides. Without a clear visual, your analysis risks being misunderstood—or ignored. Misaligned supply plans, pricing errors, or missed opportunities become inevitable when teams can’t see the relationship between scarcity and demand. Therefore, creating the correct supply&demand chart is a must-have skill for business analysis.
Supply and demand graphs—a visual powerhouse that maps price (y-axis) against quantity (x-axis), intersecting at the equilibrium point where supply meets demand. These graphs are indispensable for economists, marketers, and entrepreneurs to predict price sensitivity, optimize inventory levels, illustrate market shifts (e.g., new competitors or regulations).
This guide will show you how to create professional supply and demand graphs efficiently using Excel (for data-driven precision), Picdoc(for automatic text-to-diagram generation), Creately (for drag-and-drop simplicity), and Miro (for real-time team collaboration).
Excel
Step-by-step guide on how to create a supply&demand graph in Excel
1.Open a new or existing Excel document where you can to add a supply&demand graph.
2. Input your data.
Enter your supply and demand data into the spreadsheet.
Label the first column "Price," the second column "Quantity Supplied," and the third column "Quantity Demanded."
3. Select your data.
Highlight the data you want to include in your graph.
Click and drag your cursor over the columns and rows that contain your data. Make sure you select the headers too.
4. Click the Insert tab in Microsoft Excel in the top menu bar.
5. Click the Scatter Chart in the Charts section. The icon of Scatter Chart is shown in the following picture:
6. Insert the Scatter Chart.
You will see six different types of scatter charts designed for different needs and purposes. Here we choose the scatter chart with smooth lines and markers, which is to compare at least two sets of values or pairs of data. You can use it when there are few data points or the data represents a set of x,y pairs based on a formula. Choose the suitable scatter and click OK, then you can see a scatter appear in the Excel based on your data.
7. Swap the axis.
When creating supply&demand graph, we usually put the price on vertical axis(y axis) and the quantity on the horizontal axis(x axis), so we need to swap the axis. Use the right Mouse click anywhere in that white area, click the select data option, remove the existing items, add the new one, and edit the series as the following pictures show:
8. Add the chart title.
After successfully swapping the axis, we can add a chart title for our chart.
Click the cross symbol on the right side of the chart, and click chart title. You will see a text box on the top of the chart. Change the text to a suitable title for your chart.
With all the steps above, I believe you now clearly know how to create a supply&demand graph in the excel to visualize your data. Next, I’d like to introduce some alternatives to you to empower your graph making.
