How to Make a Venn Diagram in Word

To make a basic Venn diagram in Microsoft Word, follow these four steps:

Step 1: Add a title

The first thing you should do after is come up with a title for your diagram as it can be difficult to move text around shapes and images in Word if you try to add it later.

Add a suitable title for your Venn diagram, select the whole title and center it by clicking the button shown in the red frame below in the paragraph column.

Step2: Add circles

Click on the “Insert” tab and select “Shapes”.

You can find the circle shape in Basic Shapes.

Click the oval shape, drag your cursor and you can see an oval appear in word. If you want to make sure drawing a perfect circle not an oval, remember to press Shift while dragging your cursor.

You’ll need to add a few overlapping circles to create a basic Venn diagram.The area where circles overlap is where you’ll place the shared trait or items being compared and the overlapping area must be transparent.

How to make it transparent?

Select the shape and click Shape Format on the top right corner. Then click shape fill and choose no fill option. Now the circle is transparent now.

The next step is to add more circles.

Press CTRL+C on your keyboard to copy the shape.

Press CTRL+V on your keyboard to paste a copy of the shape.

How many circles you insert depends on how many categories you’ll be comparing.

Step3: Add text

Click on the “Insert” tab and select “Shapes”. Select the text box as shown in the picture and drag your cursor on the canvas to make a text box.

With a text box, you can put text you want in the circles separately and place them anywhere in the circle, including overlapping portions.

Step 4: Save as a document

Once you’re done, save your work as a Word document.

This way, you can easily edit it and make changes in the future.

How to make a Venn diagram with Word’s SmartArt

In Word, click on “Insert” and choose the “SmartArt” option.

You’ll see a lot of diagram options. Select “Relationship” to see there are five Venn diagrams are available. Here we choose  “Basic Venn” as seen below and click OK.

Then we can see a Venn diagram appeared on the canvas.

You can change the color and format of the diagram though SmartArt Design and Format on the top right corner.

You can also add more circles by clicking add shape or delete circles by selecting the exact circle and delete it.
